台大醫院內科部血液科醫師黃聖懿表示，多發性骨髓瘤好發於65至70歲，典型症狀是骨頭疼痛、貧血、血液鈣離子上升和尿液泡泡多，常被誤認是慢性疾病徵，而延遲治療。陳爺爺因為骨鬆、貧血等症狀，容易被輕忽，臨床不少患者從開始有症狀到被確診，可能拖上6到9個月，影響病程可能已惡化到下一個期別。
黃聖懿指出，多發性骨髓瘤是國內發生率第三高的血液癌症，每年新增患者數約500人且持續增加，以骨痛與骨折最為常見，從X光檢查會發現，這類病患骨頭會出現一個一個破洞，像是被吃掉一樣。大多數病人對第一次治療都有反應，此病治療時遇到最大困難是復發率高。
根據癌登長期追蹤資料，顯示自2007年後多發性骨髓瘤的死亡率逐年降低，近十年來新藥接續問世，讓患者的存活期從過去的兩年半延長至五到七年，甚至有四分之一超過十年，死亡率逐漸下降，這樣的治療成效，可說是抗癌的一大躍進，鼓勵病友積極治療，正向面對疾病。
